When I started Luv Luxe back in 2014, the luxury resale world looked VERY different than it does now.
There weren’t endless sourcing platforms, international suppliers, reseller communities, or luxury wholesale groups everywhere online. Honestly, I remember thinking… okay great, I started a resale business, but how exactly am I supposed to get inventory?!
Enter my boyfriend at the time, husband now, shoutout Mr. Luv Luxe. He had the brilliant idea to post ads on Craigslist that said: WE BUY BAGS FOR CASH! Even when we traveled we posted the listing in the local market and would meet up with people.
And somehow… it worked.
Now looking back, the fact that I was meeting random people from Craigslist in random parking lots carrying a bag of cash is actually unreal.
If you’re currently considering opening a resale business, I would not recommend this sourcing strategy. Times have changed, and thankfully so have we.
What’s funny though is that two people I bought bags from during those early Craigslist days STILL sell to Luv Luxe now. To this day, we laugh about those old “bank parking lot transactions” and how different everything was back then.
Needless to say, thank goodness we now have a brick-and-mortar store, secure payment methods, and a few more professional systems in place.
So no, I probably won’t meet you in a parking lot with a bag of cash anymore…Well, never say never. I guess it depends what you’re selling. 😜
